Ankle Instability Houston (Cypress), TX

Ankle Instability

Ankle instability occurs when the ligaments surrounding the ankle joint are weakened, often due to repeated sprains or injuries. Patients with this condition frequently describe a feeling that their ankle is “giving way,” especially during physical activities. Over time, untreated instability can lead to chronic pain, arthritis, or more severe injuries.

The most common cause of ankle instability is ligament damage following an ankle sprain. If the ligaments do not heal properly, they may lose their ability to provide the necessary support to the ankle. Structural imbalances, weak muscles, or flat feet can also contribute to instability.

At In Motion Foot and Ankle, diagnosis typically involves a physical exam and imaging studies such as digital X-rays or ultrasound. These tests help us assess the strength and function of the ligaments and surrounding structures.

Treatment often begins conservatively with physical therapy, bracing, and custom orthotics to restore stability. For patients with severe or persistent instability, surgical repair of the ligaments may be recommended.

Our team is committed to helping patients regain confidence in their movement. By addressing ankle instability early and effectively, we reduce the risk of re-injury and long-term complications.
